Solon stood in the room he had been allocated at Central, the suite of rooms and where he had spent most of his life before he’d gone away to school and then returned to before he’d been gifted his own planet. But it had never really been his. Hendra had ruled it all. She had reminded him of that often enough, and now he could see her in the child who had thrown them out of the meeting.

He had been surprised with how in control she had been before she wasn’t. It was odd, but he feared for the child in a way, as though she might not be what they hoped. No, that wasn’t it. He actually feared for her safety. Perhaps she was ill. He remembered his sister’s illness, when they weren’t sure if she was poisoned or sick, and the odd scans that the doctors had tried to read.

He moved back towards her office, wondering how he could suggest such a thing. But as he reached the door, the narrow-pointed silver star of the solar system seemed to move. He blinked, wondering if the secretaries who faced each other on either side could also see it.

“She has gone out,” one of them said. “Would you care to leave a message, Chief?”

He shook his head, his fingers reaching for the door. But they stopped just inches away, and he wondered at the metal that surrounded them. They did not have the control they thought they had. His sister was right, and yet he was sure she had been very wrong.

Solon shook his head, the strange sensation buzzing through him. He turned back for his rooms. On leaving the office, the council had agreed that it would be better to wait rather than head back to their respective planets. There was much to do with the new Hendra, and if she was going to be fickle in sending them away, she might call them back just as quickly.

Tempted to visit with Ebberah, Solon detoured towards her rooms. But before he was even halfway there, he changed his mind. She was not acting as herself either. She watched too closely, too longingly. As though there were something in the Hendra she wanted. She had tried to lead an uprising previously and, when his sister had first disappeared, he had thought Ebberah and Oric involved. And yet they hadn’t been. Oric had suffered as much damage as the rest of the planets, although no one had suffered as Urgway had. The cavern and the Rohen and the healing of the planet came to mind.

Shaking his head, he headed back into his own rooms and then stopped, fearing he had wandered mindlessly into another suite. But a look around confirmed it as his own space. A man stood staring at the wall, his back to the door, hands behind his back. His longer blond hair appeared to move on its own.

“Can I help you?” Solon asked.

“I thought I might be able to help you,” the man returned.
